Tahitian performers wearing skirts made of palm leaves mixed with Olympic surfers, residents, and visitors during the start of the Summer Games opening ceremony in French Polynesia on Friday morning, a considerable distance of around 10,000 miles from the primary event in Paris.

French Polynesia’s President Moetai Brotherson expressed his delight, saying, “The people of Tahiti are thrilled to host these Olympic games and to greet all our friends from around the globe. This is a unique opportunity for us. The world is observing us as we showcase this impressive wave.”

Located just a short walk from the sea and framed by the verdant mountains of Tahiti, the occasion was rich in Polynesian traditions: Guests were greeted with authentic Tahitian songs, dances, and rituals. Upon their arrival, officials from the local government, Olympics, and surfing were adorned with hand-crafted palm necklaces. Vendors offered local produce, Polynesian artworks, and cuisine under white tents providing shade.
