CNMI’s only daily ceases operations due to digital media trends

The digital transformation in media has compelled the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands’ (CNMI) sole daily newspaper, the Saipan Tribune, to cease operations by the end of the year.

The newspaper’s management has notified readers and advertisers of this decision. They stated that although the Saipan Tribune has provided valuable news to the community, changing media consumption trends—spurred by technological advancements—have altered how audiences seek news and information.

With greater internet access and the proliferation of mobile devices, consumers now expect immediate information, prompting many industries to adapt their business models and transition online.

“This shift has diminished the necessity for the Saipan Tribune. Additionally, unexpected disasters in recent years, along with ongoing local economic struggles, have hindered our efforts to keep the business viable.

“We are forced to make this incredibly tough choice, and it is with a heavy heart that we announce Saipan Tribune will stop operations on December 31, 2024.”

For over 30 years, the Saipan Tribune has served as a trusted news source for the island community and the broader Pacific region.

The newspaper has documented significant events in the CNMI, showcased individuals and groups making a positive impact, celebrated athletes and students, and reported on various issues that shaped public opinion and fostered change.

“We are immensely grateful for every member of the Saipan Tribune team—editors, writers, photographers, graphic artists, delivery staff, finance personnel, and sales and advertising team members. Their dedication has enabled the Saipan Tribune to uphold press freedom and promote journalistic integrity in the region. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to our readers, advertisers, and community partners for their invaluable support and trust.”

The impending closure of Saipan Tribune follows the shutdown of Hyatt Regency Saipan and Asiana Airlines discontinuing its Inchon-Saipan route. Numerous small businesses are also closing due to the severe economic downturn affecting the CNMI, with many others considering similar actions.
