{"id":461,"date":"2024-10-03T07:34:54","date_gmt":"2024-10-03T07:34:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pacificislands.news\/?p=461"},"modified":"2024-10-03T07:34:54","modified_gmt":"2024-10-03T07:34:54","slug":"fiji-democracy-in-decline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pacificislands.news\/?p=461","title":{"rendered":"Fiji democracy in decline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>by Tusi Tala, Staff Writer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A former long-time staff member of Fiji&#8217;s parliament has expressed concern over the quality of political debates within the House, calling for stricter enforcement of standards regarding MPs&#8217; behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, two MPs from opposing parties engaged in a heated exchange, resorting to name-calling and insults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary Chapman, who served for over 40 years in the civil service, primarily within the parliament office, shared with The Fiji Times that she believes parliamentary standards have significantly declined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She noted that it was unheard of during her tenure for MPs to use derogatory terms like &#8220;murderer&#8221; and &#8220;chor&#8221; (thief) against one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t resemble a parliament anymore,&#8221; she stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It feels like a &#8216;Banana Parliament&#8217; where members are hurling accusations of murder and lies at each other. This behavior is unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In my time, calling someone a liar could lead to suspension.
