{"id":1729,"date":"2025-05-02T03:43:29","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T03:43:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pacificislands.news\/?p=1729"},"modified":"2025-05-02T03:43:30","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T03:43:30","slug":"eu-will-never-recognize-crimea-as-russian-top-diplomat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pacificislands.news\/?p=1729","title":{"rendered":"EU will never recognize Crimea as Russian \u2013 top diplomat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dave Sullivan<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU has reaffirmed its refusal to recognize Russia\u2019s sovereignty over Crimea, the bloc\u2019s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials in Brussels are reportedly concerned that a possible peace deal negotiated by Washington and Moscow to end the Ukraine conflict would entail the US recognizing Crimea as part of Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The peninsula voted to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation shortly after the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to the Financial Times on Thursday, Kallas, the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, stated unequivocally, <em>\u201cCrimea is Ukraine,\u201d<\/em> underscoring that <em>\u201cno EU country would accept recognition of Crimea as Russia.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Trump\u2019s suggestion that lifting sanctions imposed on Russia could be part of a peace deal has also alarmed EU officials, who fear it may prompt divisions within the bloc over maintaining its own sanctions regime, according to the FT. Kallas has warned EU states against following a US policy shift toward Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/616175-eu-ukraine-conflict-russia-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>READ MORE: <\/strong>\u2018EU wants war, not talks\u2019 \u2013 Kremlin<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She told the outlet that the EU is preparing a contingency plan to sustain economic pressure on Russia, should Hungary follow through on its threat to veto an extension of sanctions in July. She noted that this could include allowing national governments to adopt the sanctions individually or for Belgium to issue a decree to seize over $200 billion worth of Russian central bank assets frozen on Belgian soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moscow has warned that seizing its assets would amount to <em>\u201ctheft,\u201d<\/em> hinting at possible retaliatory measures against Western investments in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The diplomat also emphasized that the EU could offer Ukraine financial support if the US withdraws, though military backing would be harder to replicate. <em>\u201cWe are still working with the Americans and trying to convince them why the outcome of this war is also in their interest,\u201d<\/em> Kallas said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, Moscow accused Brussels of obstructing US-Russian diplomatic efforts to end the Ukraine conflict, working instead to prolong the hostilities. <em>\u201cEurope wants war, not talks,\u201d<\/em> Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dave Sullivan The EU has reaffirmed its refusal to recognize Russia\u2019s sovereignty over Crimea, the bloc\u2019s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has stated.
