Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet officially inaugurated the newly renovated Ream Naval Base last Thursday, a project funded and executed by China. His remarks come in response to U.S. criticism regarding China\u2019s influence over this strategic facility, which is situated on Cambodia\u2019s southern coast, close to the contested South China Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The U.S. has expressed apprehension that the upgraded naval base could grant China significant strategic advantages in the Gulf of Thailand. Recent enhancements to the base include a new pier designed to accommodate larger vessels and a dry dock for repairs, which have been finalized over the last few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the inauguration ceremony in Preah Sihanouk province, Cambodian sailors showcased their skills in formation, while officials from various countries, including a significant delegation from the Chinese People\u2019s Liberation Army, attended the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prime Minister Hun Manet underscored transparency at the ceremony, stating, \u201cWe want both the Cambodian people and the international community to dispel any doubts.\u201d He reiterated that the facility will not be exclusive to Chinese use and that military vessels from other nations are welcome to dock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He expressed gratitude for China\u2019s support in the base\u2019s expansion and highlighted the strong ties between the two nations, coinciding with an anticipated visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping in two weeks. The ceremony prominently featured both Cambodian and Chinese flags, symbolizing their bilateral relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cao Qingfeng, a senior figure in the Chinese Central Military Commission, emphasized that the renovated port represents the \u201ciron-clad friendship\u201d between Cambodia and China, and will enhance regional security through joint military exercises, including the upcoming annual Golden Dragon drills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additionally, a contingent of Chinese sailors stationed at the base participated in the ceremony, marking their presence with drills and songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
