The citizens of Kiribati, who were marking their 45th Independence Anniversary over the weekend, will participate in elections next month to choose a new legislature, known as the Maneaba ni Maungatabu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kiribati achieved independence on July 12, 1979.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To celebrate the national day, the government has organized a three-week program that includes various activities such as sports events, singing, and a beauty contest, engaging the entire community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The US Embassy in Suva recently stated, “The United States is dedicated to collaborating with Kiribati to build a future that is peaceful, prosperous, and secure.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, emphasized the importance of shared interests and a commitment to democratic values in their joint efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The focus is on promoting sustainable management of marine resources, addressing the climate crisis, strengthening people-to-people connections, and enhancing economic opportunities for Kiribati’s residents. Numerous other countries and diplomatic missions have also conveyed their well wishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Australian Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, extended her congratulations to Kiribati, highlighting the joint vision for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Blue Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first round of voting for the 45 legislative seats and the presidency will take place on Wednesday, August 14, with a potential second round scheduled for the following Monday, the 19th.Candidates will mostly compete for single-member seats, although there are some seats that elect multiple MPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
