The residents of Vanimo in Papua New Guinea are requesting funds to help prepare for Pope Francis’s visit next month. The Pope will be in PNG for three days starting September 6, primarily in Port Moresby, but will also spend a day in Vanimo.
A spokesperson from the Catholic Church mentioned that the locals are enhancing the town with banners and maintaining the roadside grass. However, Father Miguel de la Calle noted that although the provincial government has allocated some funding, additional resources are needed for the preparations.
In the Baro district, residents are constructing a footpath for the Pope using their own money. Bishop Rozario Menezes, the chairperson for the Papal visit, stated that the Papal visit team is collaborating closely with the local organizing committee in Vanimo, and preparations are progressing smoothly. Pope Francis is set to arrive in Vanimo on September 8.
