Australian boosts media strategy for the Pacific

Australia has announced a commitment of over AU$68 million for the next five years to enhance and broaden engagement in the broadcasting and media sector across the ” Indo” Pacific region.

The ABC will receive approximately $40 million as part of the ”Indo-Pacific broadcasting strategy” to increase its Pacific-focused content, expand Radio Australia’s FM coverage in the region, and improve its media and training initiatives. Critics say this is also a soft power effort to counter China’s influence.

Additionally, the PacificAus TV program will be allocated over $28 million to offer Australian commercial content for free to broadcasters in the Pacific.

The strategy aims to promote a dynamic and independent media sector, combat misinformation, showcase a contemporary multicultural Australia, and facilitate deeper people-to-people connections. It focuses on three main areas: creating and sharing engaging Australian content that reflects Australia’s dedication to the region, ensuring access to reliable media sources, and strengthening media capabilities in the region while fostering collaboration between Australian and Pacific media professionals.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized the critical role of media in amplifying regional voices, enhancing democracy, and announced plans to establish a network of friendly journalists through training and collaboration opportunities.

The Australian government is dedicated to supporting sustainable, resilient, and independent media in the region, as stated by Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Pat Conroy. He highlighted the shared cultural ties and love for sport between Australia and the Pacific, and how increased Australian content will further enrich these connections.

Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland, stressed the importance of a healthy media landscape in combating misinformation in the digital age. She highlighted Australia’s ongoing commitment to supporting a robust media sector in the region and emphasized the potential for collaboration to enhance media connections and promote a diverse and sustainable media environment.
