Kiribati celebrates 45 years of independence, as nation prepares for polls

The citizens of Kiribati, who were marking their 45th Independence Anniversary over the weekend, will participate in elections next month to choose a new legislature, known as the Maneaba ni Maungatabu.

Kiribati achieved independence on July 12, 1979.

To celebrate the national day, the government has organized a three-week program that includes various activities such as sports events, singing, and a beauty contest, engaging the entire community.

The US Embassy in Suva recently stated, “The United States is dedicated to collaborating with Kiribati to build a future that is peaceful, prosperous, and secure.”

US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, emphasized the importance of shared interests and a commitment to democratic values in their joint efforts.

The focus is on promoting sustainable management of marine resources, addressing the climate crisis, strengthening people-to-people connections, and enhancing economic opportunities for Kiribati’s residents. Numerous other countries and diplomatic missions have also conveyed their well wishes.

Australian Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, extended her congratulations to Kiribati, highlighting the joint vision for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Blue Pacific.

The first round of voting for the 45 legislative seats and the presidency will take place on Wednesday, August 14, with a potential second round scheduled for the following Monday, the 19th.Candidates will mostly compete for single-member seats, although there are some seats that elect multiple MPs.

A second round of voting becomes necessary if no candidate secures at least 50 percent of the vote in the initial round.
